The sideways timeline is the Dreamtime.  Really, it makes perfect sense.  And Ajira is almost the same as Altjira.  I have no idea if this is anything like what JJ Abrams, Lindelhof and Cuse intended, but it works quite well for me.

Then again, I'm home sick from work and possibly delusional from lack of sleep, up coughing all night, so plenty of outlandish things make perfect sense at the moment :-/  I think heat makes me ill, the last time I was sick it was also 90 degrees out.

I got Tibetan Buddhism (the sideways world is the Bardo, where souls meet prior to reincarnation) and Hinduism (the castaways are a Jati, and they find ways to connect with each other over and over again).

But I've kind of thought that all along, back to when the big deal with the flashbacks was figuring out how everyone's paths had crossed before flight 815 took off. That might have been my favorite era of the show, actually. I like elaborate coincidence-driven narratives and don't need much explanation for them. Handwave a little about fate and I'm satisfied.
