The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books here. How do your reading habits stack up? Bold the ones you've read. Italicize the ones you've partially read. Strikethrough the ones you've never heard of.

all them books )

Take that, BBC!  I'm a bit embarrassed by how many I haven't heard of, but hey, at least you can't say I'm not well versed in the classics...

You Speak British Slang
British Slang: 50%

Canadian Slang: 50%

New England Slang: 50%

Prison Slang: 50%

Aussie Slang: 25%

Southern Slang: 25%

Okay, Canadian makes sense to me, as I lived there (timbits!) and New England certainly makes sense to me, and British in a pretentious kind of way (I find chav creeping into my speech lately), but prison slang? Yeah, that comes from my time in the slammer... I think to be a truly effective quiz, each question should include the choice "I have no idea," as some of these were guesswork, or what seemed like the most sensible answer. Though I suppose the fact that one answer seemed more sensible to me than another would mean I was more familiar with that particular slang, even if I don't use it really. Some of them, though--a rag baby, to me, would be a baby you conceived when you thought you couldn't, not any of the choices given.

All the carpets in our building are being cleaned today. I am glad it is marginally warm enough to open the one window that opens.

Every year I participate in a mix CD swap with friends.  This year's is Friday, and I think I have finished my mix.  Probably I still have too many songs and will have to cut it down.  Last year I was very elaborate and made a fake movie soundtrack, along with a movie synopsis.  This year, it's songs that make me happy.  So it's no surprise that I quite enjoy my mix :-)  I'll post a track listing after the party, so as not to spoil the surprise for the person who gets it.

Tonight I am once again supposedly picking up all the Raks Spooki DVDs.  We'll see.

Things to say to Najmat only if you *really* mean them include: "Can we work on drum solo stuff?" Oof my glutes. And hamstrings. And hip rotators. And all the rest. My foot remained partially numb throughout class, which was odd. I kept thinking I was stepping on something, and then realizing it was actually my own toes that I was sensing as some inanimate object. Wierd.

Just watched more of my last DVD purchase, and I am captivated by Shushu Amin. It's the performance where she's wearing a multi-colored bra and belt set over a rather hippie-ish skirt, including a wonderful Leylet Hob and a saxophone taqsim. At one point she does these rapid-fire vertical figure eights that are so strong, her belt fringe is whapping her in the elbows. Must find more of this lady! Also watched another Aida Nour orientale number which was much better than the other one, in a glamorous dress. I have decided I need a glamorous dress. Evil Dahlal has a Pharaonics sale, with several costumes that sound like they would fit...

I'm so sick of Sarah Palin's media presence (not the woman per se, just the phenomenon) but this is entertaining:

"Sarah Palin married her high school boyfriend, Todd Palin, on August 29, 1988. The Palin family lives in Wasilla, about 45 miles (72 km) north of Anchorage. The Palins have two sons (Track, 19, and Trig, four months) and three daughters (Bristol, 17; Willow, 14; and Piper, 7) [ages as of August 2008]. Todd Palin has said Track's name came from the interest Sarah's parents had in the sport and the fact that he was born in the sport's season; Bristol was named after Bristol Bay in Alaska, where Todd grew up and where he does commercial fishing; Willow was named after Willow, Alaska; Piper got her name because it is uncommon and "a cool name"; Trig's name is Norse for "strength".

1)Your first-born will be named after your parents' favorite sport:
Boxing

(my dad's favorite--I don't think my mom has a favorite sport.  The closest common sport I suppose would be Recorder Quartet, or maybe Weekend Warrior Motorcycling)

2)Your second-born will be named after a nearby area that you're not from but you like the sound of part of the name, and maybe you have nostalgic memories of said place:

Granby

(it's out in western MA somewhere, I went to a dinosaur museum there when I was a kid)

3)Your third-born will be named after another nearby place, for no reason other than you already have two children and don't have time to put much thought into another name:

Medford

(pronounced Meffid, of course)

4)Your fourth gets a "cool" name:

Allegria Zotique

5)Your fifth gets something mythological, possibly straight out of Lord of the Rings:

Branwen

(which actually i think of as a cool name, but it is certainly mythological)

from [livejournal.com profile] suzycat .  If you want to play, comment here and I'll give you a letter!

She gave me the letter S:

1. Siouxsie Sioux.  That hardly needs explaining, but I will anyway.  For a long time I was rather set against liking Siouxsie and the Banshees because as a goth girl everybody assumed I would love her.  I am often pigheaded that way.  But then I started really listening, not to mention dancing, first to the Creatures and then to the Banshees and then her new solo album is something that has really resonated with me, so now I believe she is the cat's pyjamas and I probably do gothic belly dance more often to music she is involved with than any other artist.

2. Seals.  I fell in love with them in Alaska.  So bright and pretty and fluid with limpid eyes, and also tough and wolf-like with big teeth.

3. Souhair Zaki.  A classic Egyptian dancer with ever so precise hip work and the sweetest smile ever.

4.  Scimitars.  Specifically, my baladi scimitar from Kult of Athena.  Other scimitars might be bigger and fancier but I like this one just fine.

5. Saudade, or the experience thereof.  A perfectly balanced state of longing and joy, satisfaction and loss, crying because you are so happy, laughing because you are so sad.

6. Seti.  Speaking of saudade.  He's no longer here but he will always be one of my favorite things in the world.

7. Sushi.  yum yum yum!

8. Savasana.  The all too rare moments when my apartment and my neighborhood and my brain are all quiet and calm enough to enter true relaxation are precious.

9. Samba.  I don't think I'll ever be much good at it but it's fun and it pushes me to pick up my feet and move fast.

10.  Salon.com.  I read it pretty much every day.  It unabashedly comes from a particular ideological orientation but I think is also pretty fair in its reporting, and since the ideological orientation is copasetic with my own, it sits well with me.  The one shortcoming is the entertainment reporting, as I think most of their TV and movie critics are not that smart.  I like the guy who writes the independent film blog though.

Wow, the prettiest black and purple butterfly just landed in the tree outside my window!  I am thinking it is a black swallowtail, after googling.  Mine looked more purple where the photo looks blue, but that could have been its iridescence.  Pretty!

Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody else on your friends list has done. See if anybody else responds with "I've done that." If they have, you need to add another!(2.b., 2.c., etc...) Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they've done in their life.

1.  Laid on the ground in the main cavern of Altamira and stared at the painted bison thundering across the ceiling above me.  I feel somewhat guilty about this because very few people are allowed in per year, and why should I have been one of them, but then again, I would not give up the experience for the world.

2.  Partially skinned a beaver in a big community wigwam heated by oil drums with a floor carpeted in cedar boughs in the James Bay area.  The pelts were too valuable to let the tourists do much of the skinning, but I did enough to have a feel for what it's about.

3. Held the oldest manmade object in Canada, a 2.5 million year old australopithacine stone hammer.  Felt funny to be handling it, but it's not like I could break it or anything.

Today I have been sewing, setting rhinestones and wrestling with video software (I won, I think).  Now time to see if all my costume alterations hold up to actual dancing.

In other news, had a very productive meeting with my new physical therapist this afternoon. He really knows his stuff. The one bad thing is that apparently my pretty much daily pair of fluevogs are contributing to my problems :-( But I might be able to fix things by getting another pair that are larger, and wearing the smaller one on my right foot and the bigger/wider one on my left. I think also that they have a fair amount of variation from pair to pair, so I should probably go to the store and demand to try on every size 39 black derby swirl they have in stock... It's that or ugly ass Earth shoes, and that would be a sad thing. (well, not all of them are ugly, but most of them are really not me)
