I cannot believe the difference between $70 Capezio character shoes and $120 Rummos professional ballroom shoes. The steel shank support in the Rummos is amazing, the ankle strap is very stabilizing, and my feet feel light and agile. Sweet! If the improvement in quality is directly correlated with price, I can definitely see why people spend what seems to be the average prices of $180-$240 for ballroom dance shoes.
BTW if anybody in the Boston area is looking to make any major dance supply purchases, Dancewear, on Mass Ave between Hines/ICA and Symphony Hall, is having a 25 percent off everything sale. The Lebanese owner also told me that he is going to Lebanon soon and hopes to bring back some mid-level belly dance costumes, since he's realized there's a market for it here. He used to dance in a Lebanese troupe alongside belly dancers and so is very belly dance friendly, unlike the previous owners of Dancewear who I found sneered at us as not real dancers. Anyway, two thumbs up for Dancewear.

Dance supplies
Date: 2004-12-29 11:41 am (UTC)If you think about it, what's $240 if you're spending between $5000 and $10000 on a gown (as ballroom dance competitors do) really? :)
I have to check out the place on Mass Ave. Did it used to be Patterson's? I know there was a Patterson's in that general area years ago (that I never made it to), which was why I asked.
Its good to know about too - Teddy's is just too sleazy for me (or rather, the owner is) :)
Re: Dance supplies
Date: 2004-12-29 11:49 am (UTC)I went to Teddy's first yesterday while shoe-shopping and was very disappointed by their selection, even apart from any sleaziness. People always say their prices are better than Dancewear's, but I didn't think so, especially not with the sale going on!
Bellydancers can easily spend $800 - $1200 on a professional costume, so I guess the same logic holds there, why not spend $240 on a pair of shoes? More often than not, the street shoes I'm wearing cost more than the rest of the clothes on my body put together anyway :-)
