Well, first things first, I guess:  what an intriguing opening number!  Kind of Maori Reservoir Dogs enter the Matrix, as envisioned by the always stimulating Mia Michaels.  I am not at all sure honestly what I thought.  I admired the dancing and the choreography, and I really appreciate the idea of drawing on South Pacific dance traditions, right down to the scary fierce warrior faces.  OTOH the fake facial tattoos did make images of blackface float in my head, and I could not help but wonder whether these sorts of tattoos are supposed to be casually reproduced on people who haven't earned them by birthright or accomplishment.  Maybe Kupono could wear them with some degree of honesty, but otherwise, I ponder.  Tomorrow I will see if I can find any information from Mia Michaels about what she was trying to do, and look for a video clip.

And then the results.  I have to admit that Caitlyn danced well, probably better than Kayla did, as Kayla's nervousness was radiating off her in waves.  But I really liked Ashley's understated solo.  Granted the woman was wearing all black with a soft marcel wave dancing to CocoRosie, so I am somewhat predisposed here, but I'd rather watch a performance like hers than one like Caitlyn's, which to me is just flinging oneself about without much interpretation.  I can see what the judges were saying, but it's not the decision I would have made.  The guys:  I didn't think Jason extended himself enough, so I don't know where they were coming from with all that "best solo ever" stuff.  What was that guy's name from the season Sabra won, the rather snooty guy?  Danny.  He had to dance for his life a couple of times, and he was a much better dancer.   Max's solo was better than Kupono's, I thought, but the judges were taking a holistic view, luckily for Kupono.  Still, I think Max is a great dancer, and I'm very sorry to see him go.

Kupono and Kayla could be a great combination, I will say.

You know, I think the only musical guest artists on the results show who haven't glaringly obviously lip-synched were Kate Perry and Lady Gaga.  So good on them.

I couldn't watch last night. I think I would have been really upset if I did.

I liked Ashley a lot and feel she has more potential than Kaitlyn on the show. What was their reason for letting her go?

Max - I thought he was a better dancer than others (why weren't Jeanine and her horrible partner in the bottom!?!? stupid America) but I can understand letting him go.

Man, sometimes watching this show is so heartbreaking...

I'll have to go look for a clip of the opening number. Sounds interesting.

Once of these days we should have a SYTYCD night. There are a bunch of us that watch the show. It might be fun to get together and eat popcorn while making our own commentary. :)

I was disappointed but not shocked about Ashley, after seeing her understated solo. I don't like either of those other blondes who were in the bottom 3 though.

I was kinda shocked about Max - his solo seemed a lot better than Kupono's although I like both of them. I think Max got ditched because they think he looks old and they just like Kupono. But I also think Ashley and Kupono had really similar trajectories so far and it's weird she's gone while he isn't.

Oh and I watched with a bunch of people last night and it was really fun - I recommend it! We taped Wednesday's show and watched both of them together last night.
