all I did last night was sit on the couch with my poor gastrocs on ice...
So the winning dress by Viktorya was pretty and fun and well made, but it was so ill-suited to her client's figure and posture that I am very surprised that no judges commented on that. Well, I suppose they couldn't without being mean to a 16 year old girl, but I thought that jeweled center piece over the breastbone emphasized how her shoulders rolled forward and the overall shape made the girl look droopy. And I agree a bit with Tim Gunn: "Furthermore, the jewel emblazoned panel on the front of the halter made the dress look more appropriate for a hostess at a Vegas cocktail lounge than a teenager attending a suburban prom." The runner-up, Sweet Pea, made a very elegant Grecian dress but something really bothered me about how it draped across the front of the body. Maybe the waistband should have been a little wider or a little narrower, not sure. Pretty daring on the cups there, though I'm sure the client's mom was happy that Sweet Pea did not stick to her daughter's wishes on the back of the dress..
Funny seeing Christian being insecure and not at all confident for once. I wonder if he's ever had to work directly with clients before or whether he's mostly designed in a studio for an abstract customer. Hope he internalizes some of what he learned. His dress wasn't *that* awful, all things considered--the color was fabulous on his client--but it was definitely in train wreck territory.
Kevin's client's mother was pretty awful about her daughter's figure. Granted the dress was not that flattering in the tummy area, but there would have been nicer ways to put it. I think what bothered me most about that design was that her boobs looked ready to spill out the sides and there didn't seem to be any support at all. Not exactly a prom look. At least Sweet Pea's client looked contained by her dress, even if it was pretty revealing.
Chris' dress was beautiful and I would have thought a strong contender for winning. Ditto for Rami's dress. Don't the judges realize there's always that girl who wants to look like a flapper at the prom? I would agree that the color choice was not great, but the style was lovely. And Jillian's dress was very elegant as well. Didn't think very much of Kit's dress. The top looked crooked to me. I liked the tube of jewels waistband Ricky made for his dress, but otherwise it was dull, I would agree. I really don't like bubble skirts.

Date: 2008-01-10 05:47 pm (UTC)The blue dress that won... was HIDEOUS!!! I hate that whole bubble hemline.. it really looked like something Klum would wear at 6mos pregnant. Completely unflattering.
The red dress.. (looks like Kevin's from your post)... YIKES! That mother was just wonderful for her daughters body image. While the dress was not..flattering.. the way he made it.. it could have been made more flattering with more thought to the waistline.
The cream dress (Sweet P's)... was gorgeous.. but it did kinda bug me in the waist.. like it wasn't fitted right.
The green Grecian inspired drapey one.. Nice.. Would have liked the skirt
longer and the cup... smaller.. it made her breast vanish.
The brown nightmare.... I hated this dress! I hated the way it fit (or didn't fit) his client. I loved the color.. would have loved to have seen it longer.. His argument that he was a 'designer'.. well then design something that works with your clients body.. not against it.
The light colored one with the jeweled belt.. Nice..would have been smashing in purple.
I might be missing a few... but... all in all.. the dresses were very interesting.

Date: 2008-01-10 07:14 pm (UTC)Alex Hacke is being interviewed on WFMU out of New Jersey right now. I know you probably can't listen to it at work, but they do archive them. If you check the site in the next few days, they apparently put them up as MP3s before deep archiving them.

Date: 2008-01-11 12:21 am (UTC)I actually thought Christian's dress was pretty cool, in many ways. It wasn't as bad as itcould have been. NOtice the judgees didn't criticize the dress that much, more his reaction to it.

Date: 2008-01-11 03:53 pm (UTC)If Christian's dress had been better fit and a foot or so longer, it could have worked. I think he spent so much time on the lace and fripperies that he shortchanged the real work of fitting and sewing. I really did think the color was gorgeous on the girl.
