I can see you in Alaska ~ I know you're a true blue New Englander, but you've got a certain je ne sais quoi ~ an inner strength and earthiness, that just seems like it would fit that area well.
Remind me on Friday to show you my Alaska photos so you can see me in khakis and plaid wool jacket and gum boots, sporting a .375 rifle--that's earthy for you! ;-)
I truly did love Alaska, and I still carry around a big piece of it with me. My mental place of refuge is a sun-dappled patch of old growth forest with a little stream on a cobblestone bed running through it that we stumbled upon one day, it was completely perfect.
I worked in the Tongass National Forest, in the panhandle of Alaska. That's all temperate rainforest, like much of the rest of the northwest coast. The Wikipedia photos are about what it looks like--I googled around trying to find a photo of some old growth, but couldn't find anything better than middle-aged growth. The US Forest Service's website is of course down. Here's a raptor rehab center I volunteered at, though.
i had an inkling you were on the panhandle from your description of that idyllic locale. Chalk it up to your descriptive powers rather than my mastery of Alaskan terrain.
