[1] The only time I'd ever bought stamps in the last few years was for mailing out SK fliers with postcard stamps on rolls. A year or so ago, when I did have to mail something that wasn't Priority or Express mail, and so entailing buying a First Class stamp, I brought my spittle-soaked stamp back to the clerk complaining that it didn't stick, and he had to patiently explain that all the stamps were self-stick. "When did that happen?" I asked. "Um, about five years ago."
