I had a most excellent 2-day workshop this weekend with the Argentinian belly dancer Amir Thaleb (web site has sound)--he was my teacher Seyyide's primary teacher, so I was really looking forward to the workshop. I also have to admit I was very curious about what a man teaching bellydance would be like, just because it was something I had never experienced before. I'd never even seen a high quality male bellydancer before. Really, the only difference was that some hip movements were a little harder to see on him as he demonstrated them, as he is thin-hipped and I suspect, without knowing for sure, that male and female hip musculature must be a bit different given the centers of gravity and all that. He was also charming, which didn't hurt (and just to fulfill stereotypes, the man with him was introduced as his "travelling companion and costume designer"). I could absolutely see a lot of the source of Seyyide's dancing in him. I learned a lot this weekend, and my body knows it. I'm not sure that I'll be able to flex my calf muscles tomorrow, but it feels worth it at the moment.
The only real negative side to the workshop is that 40 or so sweating people completely overwhelmed the studio's airconditioning, so I've been hovering on the edge of heat exhaution and dehydration all weekend. But now I can rest up and drink plenty of fluids and try to stay cool. At least it's not as abysmally hot tonight.
I took that relationship quiz thingy, but before I was even done I knew it was pretty much meaningless since most of the questions didn't have the answers I wanted. Plus, my results said "but you're a lightweight with alcohol ," which I pretty catagorically know not to be true. Stupid quiz.
