I have to say, I never thought of the meaning of Jack's tattoos as one of the biggest mysteries on the show--I was sure they'd have meaning, perhaps related to the entire story, but not exactly something to obsess about. I guess others must have felt differently. That said, though, I did enjoy the flashback although it was very very X-Files circa season two. Bai Ling's hair was gorgeous.
Saddest part of the episode was when Sawyer said to Kate that she only had sex with him because she thought he'd be dead soon, and she couldn't or wouldn't deny it. Sawyer really is a profound romantic at heart and Kate may destroy him. Huh, maybe he and Jack are Gilgamesh and Enkidu (Locke was reading the Epic of Gilgamesh last season).
Neat things I learned at the Lost Easter Egg site: a painting by Claire's baby daddy was hanging in Penny's father's office when Desmond was in there to ask to marry Penny. The thing about the black and white stones was interesting; I'm not sure I buy that they were on Desmond's table, but the quote from Cuse and Lindelhof is thought provoking. The site also noted that the mark put on Juliet resembled the cross of St. Peter, which has come to symbolize unworthiness and profound respect for one's superiors.
I think the show is definitely running the risk of becoming more intellectually engaging than actually entertaining, but I hope once the rest of the cast starts appearing regularly things will pick up. More Hurley!
