I thought that if I bought decongestants and juice and tissues yesterday, it would guarantee that I would wake up feeling just fine this morning, but it didn't really work out that way. Been sickish all weekend, but I've officially crossed the line to sick. bleh.
Good weekend, though. Reasonably productive Sekhmet rehearsal on Friday evening, followed by dining and dancing and music. Then Amira Jamal's student recital, which went by in a blur. Photos of me, taken by the lovely and talented
cannongrrl , doing my meleya leff are here and the group number here. I especially like this meleya one and this group one. That last one makes me happy about posture and muscles, though in a couple of the group ones I am looking more pregnant than the pregnant lady next to me. Someday I will get the hang of sucking in my gut during big hip circles. But overall I don't mind what I see. One of Amira Jamal's students from one of the other classes came up to me and asked me if I had danced to M.I.A. last year in the recital, since she'd just been watching the DVD--she didn't exactly look like somebody who'd be into M.I.A., but I thought hey, that's cool and said yes, it was me. She said that her teenage daughter has always scoffed at her belly dancing habit, but when she was watching the recital DVD a few weeks ago, my song came on and her daughter came running into the room saying omg M.I.A., that's so cool! And now she thinks belly dance is cool and is going to some classes with her mom, for which her mom thanked me. I'm a teenage role model! How utterly strange!
Sunday dance friend Jemileh and I were planning to go to a workshop with Hadia down in Danbury but we got hopelessly lost on the way there and gave up. Stupid mapquest. It was nice to hang out with her for a few hours though and talk about various stuff. She is an awesome person. Also somewhere out in Central MA (I did mention being hopelessly lost, didn't I?) I saw a really cool burro, except that it was about two or three times the size you usually see a donkey. Possibly it was a draft mule still in its shaggy winter coat, or maybe there's such a thing as a draft donkey. Got home, and tried to take a nap, but the stupid neighbors are back in full force and ran up and down the back stairs and did laundry all afternoon. Doing laundry inevitably seems to involve the whole family going into the basement together and yelling directly under our bedroom. Someday I swear we will make a point of having the loudest sex imaginable when they do that. I dozed a bit and decided when I got up to do some yoga, and as soon as I rolled out my mat one of the kids started throwing a temper tantrum right overhead. I was pretty ready to join him at that point. But I was able to tune him out and get started and he shut up before long anyway.
Then it was off to the Middle East for my show, which went ok. By far the best part was as I was leaving the performance area--Melina was there with her family, and her little girl jumped up and down yelling "yay! yay!" for me as I came by :-) I think it was the shiny teal mermaid skirt--I can seriously get a gig as the Little Mermaid, what with my red hair, if I can just find a shell bra--but making little girls happy is a very good thing. Less good was getting body tipped without warning; the guy did know how to do it respectfully, money folded around his hand and just put in my bra strap, but I don't want to go giving other guys ideas. I smiled and patted my head so he'd know for next time and put the money on the stage, which hopefully wasn't offensive but I just wasn't going to dance with money on me, ya know? I'm not exactly sure why it seems more respectful to have money thrown at your head, but it is. Najmat was there, I can ask her if I handled it ok. Speaking of whom, it was scary to learn she was there, I don't think she'd ever seen me dance solo before. I guess that hurdle's been crossed. Wish I'd been more prepared, but c'est la vie. Good crowd response, so I must have been doing something right.
Tonight I will go home and do mounds of laundry and make a strawberry-apple pie, since I have a bunch of giant strawberries that need to be used pretty much now. I'm very spoiled by the fruit of the month thing I got from work for christmas, such a luxury but so good. I never knew that I liked nectarines before I had sweet fresh plump juicy ones, as opposed to the bred-for-shipping-durability-and-color ones you get at the grocery store. I think I'm getting pineapples next month, I'm not exactly sure what to do with them but I'm sure they will be excellent pineapples. Hopefully they will be mild so my citrus allergy doesn't explode.

Absolutely. If you're going to get revenge on your neighbors, it should involve the maximum fun for you.
I hope you feel better soon. Maybe all the vitamins in your strawberry-apple pie will help? Now I totally want to try that. I never even heard of making a pie with strawberries and apples.
