Nov. 20th, 2006 01:04 pmIn weasel news, Ronan seems to be having a flare-up of some sort. He started grinding his teeth Saturday night/Sunday morning and his bathroom habits have been getting messier and stinkier. I started him on pepcid a/c to settle his stomach, since he does the grinding usually while he's eating, which would indicate that his stomach is the source of the distress. And I've got a call in to the vet. I'm feeling pretty down about this because I know he is in pain and because I'm not sure there's much we can do for him beyond what we're doing now. Currently he's on about the maximum dose of pediapred for his size. Imuran is the only other drug we could try--it's used in people to help combat organ rejection after transplants, so it helps with IBD which is in some ways the body rejecting its own intestines. But ferrets on Imuran tend to develop bone marrow suppression, and that's no good either. Maybe he could go on it for a little while during flare-ups and then off it when he's stable... Guess I wait for the vet. She seemed down on the concept of Imuran before, I think because it is not officially a ferret drug at this point, but some very big name ferret vets recommend it when nothing else is working.
He got fatter, too, if you can believe it. He weighed in at a whopping 1396g on Saturday. We are limiting his food and feeding Seti separately, so I don't know how he can keep gaining. He's hungry all the time, too. If you get within ten feet of the kibble bowl he's immediately underfoot hoping to be fed. It makes me think bad scary worried things about tumors, more specifically lymphoma since he did have enlarged abdominal lymph nodes. I think they tested his biopsies for that, though.
Seti's too skinny right now, they're a regular Laurel and Hardy together. I think that even though his new feeding location is perfectly accessible to him, he's a little out of sorts about there never being kibble in the regular dish, as Ronan vacuums it all up when he is fed.
I hate having to worry about them all the time...
