our apartment's furnace was cleaned this morning. About 45 minutes ago, I decided to turn on the heat--it was only 65 in the house, which isn't actually that bad, but I was sick of being even a little chilled. Ten minutes later, the cellar smoke alarm started going off, and the basement is full of a creosote smell. Now our furnace is turned off, and we wait for the repairman, who is supposed to arrive sometime before midnight. I suspect what has happened is that the cleaning stirred up all kinds of creosote and soot, and turning on the furnace released some of that into the air which in turn set off the smoke alarm.
I forget whether I already mentioned the part about only getting four hours of sleep Monday night. There's no way I can go to bed knowing that there will be workmen in the house (or worse case scenario, that we have to leave, in which case we'd pack up the ferrets and head for my parents' guest room, I guess).
I keep reminding myself that it's not really that cold in the apartment. But on a karmic level, this really seems unfair.
