Afleet Alex had to be retired due to injury :-( I'm sure he will enjoy his retirement, they generally do and he's got a very supportive human team behind him, but it's so sad to see once again a horse will never have the chance to prove if he was the true champion that he seemed to have the potential to be. It looks like the root of the injury was in that near fall in the Preakness, even though he checked out ok at the time--it's still very little short of miraculous that he's even retiring and going on to a stud career, when a stumble like that could have been so immediately disastrous. I hope he can pass some of that incredible will and drive on to his offspring. I guess we'll see in a few years...

Today is cake all day at the office day. We're testing cakes to see if they are good enough for our boss to send as christmas gifts. In the morning, it's coffeecake. It was tasty, but the crumb is a little too fine for coffeecake if you ask me. In the afternoon, it is something called Ted Williams cake, which appears to be a chocolate and walnut cake. Despite the fact that the picture on the box shows the cake liberally coated in walnuts, the manufacturer (or probably more correctly, the manufacturer's legal team) deemed it necessary to print a warning on the box stating that those with severe walnut allergies should not eat this cake. You know, if a person with severe walnut allergies can't figure out on their own that they shouldn't eat the walnut-covered cake, then I don't think the printed warning will do much good either, and maybe generally speaking they should be taking responsibility for the consequences of their actions anyway. And I say this as a person with mild walnut allergies who knows she will suffer mildly for eating this cake. ;)

I actually liked the fine crumb, at least as a Christmas-present kind of special cake. I don't think I'd prefer it year round but it did seem to be appropriate as a holiday treat.

It's tough to see how many three-year-olds don't make it to the ranks of the older handicap horses. I can't remember Alex's dam's bloodlines, but he's got an excellent sire line, so I hope he does make a quality sire--and ideally sire a colt (or a filly!) who can accomplish what he couldn't.
