Nov. 29th, 2005 10:48 amSo early on in last week's episode, we see Locke doing a crossword puzzle. The clue he has his pencil at is "Enkidu's match" or "Enkidu's friend"--whatever the exact clue was, the answer is Gilgamesh. I've been meaning since then to look up the epic of Gilgamesh, which I only partially remember. So after reading this summary here, it seems to me that perhaps Ana Lucia is Gilgamesh ("he is young and oppresses his people harshly") and Sayid is her Enkidu--he is clothed (darn) but he does come rushing out of the jungle where the wild animals live. And it's quite easy to see Shannon as Shamhat, the temple harlot; she does calm Sayid and tame his wildness, if one interprets wildness as his unresolved guilt over Nadia and his friend in Australia in particular and having been part of Saddam's repressive regime in general. And of course it's worth noting that the Epic of Gilgamesh took place in what is now Iraq. Perhaps the plane is the meteorite, and the embrace is Ana Lucia's seizing of control of the tailies. And then the two of them propose to go into the Great Cedar Forest and defeat its demon guardian--the jungle, the mysterious forces at work therein. Perhaps Sawyer will take the role of Ishtar, throwing himself at Gilgamesh, much to Gilgamesh's scorn...
It's not all perfect and I could be all wrong but it is interesting to speculate...
