A pyrex baking dish just exploded in my oven. I thought they weren't supposed to be able to do that. It wasn't cold when it went into the oven, because it was on a shelf above the oven prior to going in. The stuff in it was at room temperature. All I can think is that I had it too close to the oven wall or too close to the cookie sheet with most of the pumpkins on it. I've used this dish plenty of times before, but it wasn't more than a couple of years old. Maybe the steam trapped under the baking pumpkin halves somehow caused the explosion. I repeat, huh.

I was thinking of finishing the pies tonight, but I am coming to the conclusion that today is *really* not my day, so I will just have to get up early tomorrow and take care of them in the morning. Plus the oven is now full of broken glass, so once the pumpkins (the please dear god let them be salvageable otherwise i will cry and cry pumpkins) are cooked I will have to let the oven cool down so I can clean it, and once I'm done cleaning it I suspect I will want to be done with the kitchen for the night.

I should dance now but I'd probably break my ankles and I think this day has broken my gumption. I think I'll just practice zills while sitting on the couch. Hopefully that won't endanger anything too much...

addendum: my firewall just decided that livejournal was attacking me and blocked it. Maybe I should just go to bed before I break anything else and start again with a brand new day. Sigh.

Thank goodness it exploded while contained within the oven! Once, Curse and I had terrible flu's at the same time, and he was washing dishes while putting water on for tea, but didn't notice he turned the wrong burner on. The burner he turned on didn't have the pot for water, but a stack of dirty pyrex pie dishes waiting to be washed... Thank *goodness* he came out of the kitchen just for a moment when they exploded. Otherwise he would have been seriously injured. We even have parts of our floor melted from where the shards fell.

I just saw your post from earlier today where you mentioned being concerned about how you'd do cooking tonight with sharp and hot things(!). Try to take it easy and be safe...

Oh, dear. I thought that was the point of Pyrex, that it didn't explode. Although I do remember reading somewhere that it was possible for Pyrex to crack in ways you wouldn't necessarily notice until it exploded. Hmmn.

I don't suppose it will be much comfort, but in the event you need to re-bake pumpkins tomorrow sans glass shards, Wilson's is open 9:00am - 1:00pm...

Damn! Yeah, I thought Pyrex was supposed to be immune to that sort of nonsense. I'm just glad you weren't hurt!
