That creeping feeling of not-quite-sick-but-definitely-not-well turned into definitely sick sometime yesterday morning. Felt wretched by the end of the day and was already thinking about calling in sick to work today--then went to a troupe rehearsal in the damp rain carrying all my groceries with me because between work and rehearsal was the only time I had to go grocery shopping, only to find that nobody else showed up and that the whole thing was a wasted trip. Nothing like arriving home exhausted with nothing to even show for it. Well, I had my groceries, I suppose, which was good because I'd bought soup. And my body did need a day off from dancing, though my poor (improving but still quite hurty) foot didn't really get any rest. So not surprisingly I woke up this morning feeling much worse, and so here I sit at home full of post-nasal drip and self-pity and not looking forward to walking to walgreen's in the rain for some juice and cough drops.

I'm still going to go to the Dance Complex tonight to work with my wings--I've been looking forward to it so much that it would feel worse to stay home, I think. Plus I'd have to pay for the room at this point anyway, since they have a 24 hour advance cancellation policy. I just have to figure out how to get my wings there safe and dry. I don't imagine getting wet is good for pleated organza. When I finally get myself over to Walgreens I think I'll pick up some duct tape and make a sort of carrying case out of pieces of the box the wings came in. That won't be totally watertight, but then I can put the whole thing in a plastic bag and hopefully make it there ok.

Well, on a happier note I finished reading Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys last night and enjoyed it tremendously. I've always enjoyed his non-graphic fiction, but thought there were some things about his writing that kept him from being truly great--his plotting wasn't always that tight, things could get a bit twee (a la Terry Pratchett, whom I can't stand) and some forceful and pointed editing would have helped. I think that with Anansi Boys and Coraline, he's really become a *good* writer. Both books maintain a sense of tension from start to finish and nothing feels inessential or trivial in them. Both books evoke primordial human fears in a way that gets underneath your skin and makes you believe in what you are reading while you are immersed in it. Anyway, I highly recommend it. btw, you don't need to have read American Gods at all to read this one. I'm also looking forward to hearing Lenny Henry's narration of Anansi Boys, which I imagine will be just perfect. Although Neil's Tiger voice at the reading was pretty spot-on as well.

ok, off to brave the rain and the damp...
