There's a very nice article on Xena in Salon today. Young makes a lot of good points, but this, for me, was a huge part of why I enjoyed the show so much: "Xena was not "strong but feminine"; she was unapologetically strong and unapologetically female, sexy and powerful, unafraid to get sweaty and dirty on the job, and all the more beautiful for it."

Thanks for posting the link.
It was funny that they mentioned the psychologist who took Xena as an manual for living. I totally had Xena as an inspiration when I was working at that terrible place last winter... I remember watching the episodes and asking myself "What can I learn from this?"

Unfortunately I do not think the show is as good as Buffy. I do think that BtVS took its rightful place as the better "girl-power" show because it was simply more entertaining. But then I'm still in Season One of Xena, and perhaps it gets better. I love it, but I don't feel very attached to the characters.

Author of Salon article, checking in here. ;) (I was tracing the link backs to the piece.)

Season 1 of Xena is not a good measure of the show, particularly the first half of it. The show took a while to find its "legs," though there were some very good episodes. S2 is where it gets really great.
