Oojami! I am utterly thrilled to be part of this production--I like this band a lot and it's a real honor to share the bill. If i have ever made you a mix cd of Arabic electronica, I probably put their song Chicky on it. It was also one of their albums playing when I gave impromptu drunken bellydance classes in my kitchen one night :-)

One of the best musical hybrids from London makes its Boston debut celebrating
their latest CD "Urban Dervish" featuring U.K. Beats and Turkish Sounds! Urban
Dervish fuses Turkish elements with a myriad of cultural traditions, providing a
whirling dervish cyclone of sound with layers of attitude. Their vibrant live show
features trademark Turkish percussion with exotic sounds from the Philippines to
Mozambique. Funk and break beats slink up to belly dancing and Sufi nuances,
topped with vibrant Latin and African rhythms.

Boston's Ziaf, just back from
sold-out shows in Europe, are gaining international acclaim for their contemporary
versions of songs made famous by the late French chanteuse, Edith Piaf. Last
year's debut recording, "Hommage à Edith" has garnered radio play in Boston,
Montreal and Switzerland, and the band has recently been featured on NPR, the BBC,
and WBZ Channel 4. At their Regent show, Ziaf will be celebrating the release of
their brand-new recording, "Hello, Boy! You Come With Me?".

In a rather roundabout way--back in April, I performed at a hafli following a workshop by renowned dancer Morocco. She performed last, and when she started performing the choreography that we had learned during the workshop, Za-Beth, the workshop/hafli sponsor, urged those of us in costume to go up there and dance with her. It was really a special and heartwarming moment. Later, Za-Beth approached the group of us who had performed and asked us about doing a modified version of Morocco's choreography to open up the Oojami show. She's a big time promoter in the scene (she's the regional representative for Miles Copeland's Bellydance Superstars and Mondo Melodia label, which Oojami is on), and it's important to her personally to have Boston represented in big events, to prove that our city has a quality scene going on. So that's how I've ended up in a troupe opening for Oojami :-)
