I survived the Morocco workshop and hafli performance. I had forgotten what a toll her dancing style takes on my feet--there's a lot of shimmying while up on the ball of the foot, so basically you are microstomping your foot for hours on end during a workshop. The lack of sleep and overabundance of gin and tonics I had last night did not make things any easier. But as I said, I survived and even learned stuff.
My performance went okay. It was of course better in rehearsal than on stage--for one thing, I never dropped the cane in a rehearsal, but on stage--yep. At least it was just a moment when I was standing with the cane resting on the ground, so it didn't go flying into the crowd or anything like that. I am told I made a very cute face at it when it fell over. All in all, it didn't go too badly for a first cane solo. I think I really like cane. I wonder if there's any way to do goth/cane fusion... There was a nice variety of performers, and Morocco put on a great show. I can't believe the woman is 65. I was all fan girl and asked her if i could take my photo with her--not only did she say yes, but she hugged me and kissed me on the cheek. yay for supportive legends of dance!
I tried on a pretty damn amazing leopard print costume from Anatolia that I have more or less commited to buying via layaway. It has laticework on the legs which I did not think would really suit me until I tried it on and was quite pleasantly surprised (in fact, my reaction when I saw myself in the mirror was 'hot damn, that's *me*?'). Seyyide somehow thought it looked too much like my copper coins and leopard print costume, but I don't really see that, and neither did the other people who were there who had seen me in both costumes. The coin costume is earthy and fusion-y, this one is all glamour and sequins and cabaret. I'm trying not to think about how much it costs; even on layaway it will be a few months before I own it. but hey, how often do I buy fancy costumes?
now I think i will follow Morocco's post-workshop advice and take a nice hot bath. If you never hear from me again, I fell asleep and drowned ;-)

Date: 2005-04-25 03:35 pm (UTC)Yes to troupe plots! I'm sure you are pretty busy yourself right now--my schedule clears up a bit in June, if we wanted to try to get together in the summer to work on things. I'm pretty sure we could get a performance slot at those Kabaretts I perform in at the Zeitgeist. I still have nebulous thoughts swirling around in my head for a sort of goth hafli for the first hour of Ceremony some night...
