It was looked upon favorably in my grad school school lab (both for the grad students and the post-docs). It meant that you were making the most of your downtime so you could spend more awake time doing the work. Too bad I was bothered about sleeping when I could hear people walking around.
I think you should just do it. Put a little sign next to your that reads "smoke break." No one will say anything, especially since you aren't a smoker!
In an enlightened workplace, we could. I should move to a country that has siestas. Unfortunately naptime for me seems to be right around when I'm driving home.
