Upcoming shows
Apr. 1st, 2005 01:11 pmPosting partly for promotion, partly to get it straight in my head...
Saturday, April 9: Performing with the Ominous Collective at Kabarett 16-Bit at the Zeitgeist Gallery, 7pm til close (I'm not performing all that time, I'm doing a ten minute set about mid-event). Seven Sunless Days, M's band, will also be on the bill, though we will not be on the stage at the same time. This one will be wicked goth of me.
Friday, April 15: Performing as a cast member of A Gypsy in Cairo, a theatrical extravaganza about the story of two lost souls finding love, with, of course, lots of belly dancing along the way. Regent Theatre in Arlington, showtime 8pm. Ticket information can be found at the link given here; it's $25, but it will be absolutely worth it. Johara performs amazing feats in bringing these big shows together, and nobody else in Boston is doing anything on such a grand scale. I'm in an Egyptian marketplace number playing a Ghawazee woman (an Egyptian branch of Rom).
Sunday, April 24: Performing at Morocco's birthday bash hafli following the Morocco workshop at the Arlington Elks Lodge, I think the hafli starts at 5pm. I am insane.
Then possibly a gig in New Hampshire on May 7, though I kind of hope not as that's Kentucky Derby Day.
May 14: Amira Jamal's spring student recital. I'll be in a group number, assuming karshilima ever takes with me, and doing a solo. Probably early or mid-afternoon, somewhere at BU.
Sunday, May 22: Performing with Troupe Sarab in Mavi Dance's show A New Land, 2pm, Brookline High School. Mavi Dance really are an electric group of performers--they were the big troupe who performed at the Eastern Journey show last spring. The Boston Globe describes them as "gloriously fiesty" and I'm honored that they asked us to be in their show.
And that's that, at least for now. My foot isn't that thrilled with all of this, but after A Gypsy in Cairo, I don't have to perform barefoot for a while, so that will help (you can't do the Ghawazee moves in the kind of heels I have and I don't have time to find the right sort between now and then). Last night I danced to the set I have planned for the Kabarett, and I'm very happy to say it went much like I've been envisioning it in my head, even the backbend/drop to the floor, although that definitely needs some smoothing out. I'm planning to use zills for one song, the neighbors will just have to deal with my practicing (just like we have to deal with their kids screaming and running, so no guilt on my part). I dug out my big skirt, and it turns out the fabric is soft enough to do all the skirt-swishing work for karshlima, so that's good.
After dancing I decided to take a nice hot bath to give my muscles a break. If any further proof of my gothiness were needed, I took a black bath--not on purpose, but it was amusing.
crematia13 and my brother gave me some crayola bath tints for Christmas, and the package said you could mix the tablets to get different colors. I figured one red tablet and one blue tablet would give me a purple bath, but no--it was black. And it was indeed relaxing; I slept astonishingly well, and yoga was much easier in the morning. Too bad every day doesn't have time for a late night bath.
In other news, Ronan is still a hefty weasel, but you can see that he has shoulders and elbows and hips now. Progress! Tomorrow he gets his rabies shot. Hope he won't get worried during the car ride that he's being taken somewhere else to live. He really is such a sweetie.
