I thought the overall quality was kinda meh last night. The judges were harsh, but it was mostly deserved. The big exceptions were Karen in her and Kevin's hip hop number, Legacy and Kathryn's contemporary piece and Mollee and Nathan's Bollywood. Karen's probably my favorite dancer right now; maybe her hip hop wasn't perfect, but her attitude was. As the judges said, Legacy was a real surprise this week. I had pretty much written him off as being good at physical tricks but lacking real musicality and grace, too emotionally locked up. I don't know if this was as big a breakthrough as it looked or if he had been holding back earlier, but he was impressive, and Kathryn was as well. There may have been some sloppiness in Mollee and Nathan's Bollywood, but I thought they really caught the feel of it in terms of movement quality and groundedness. I don't know if it would have been quite as exciting without the stage set and lights (Wade Robson's number certainly wouldn't have been), but as it was, the piece was quite enjoyable.
I suspect that Phillip asked to go home, given what he'd been through. He's a much better dancer than what he did in that awful samba. Probably would have sent Noelle home over Bianca, but I don't feel that strongly about it.
I appreciated Adam Shankman calling out the choreographers for what he saw as their mistakes. I'm finding him a very refreshing addition to the jidges this season.
My body is toast today and I can't get Shik Shak Shok out of my head.

Date: 2009-11-05 03:13 pm (UTC)(of course I'll happily watch Wade spectacles any time--M and I really want to go back to Vegas in general, but especially since Wade Robson has been working with Cirque du Soleil to create that show for Cris Angel. That magician's rabbit funeral piece that was on a couple of seasons ago is from that show)

Me likes Shanks and likes having him on board, but if that goddamned Paula chair means I don't get me some Debbie Allen or Lil' C this season I'm gonna have words (with the screen and possibly the man upstairs who won't understand what I am shouting)

Date: 2009-11-06 12:54 am (UTC)I loved watching Wade teach his choreography. I don't know if any of you watch 'Dancing with the Stars' but last year he performed and/or choreographed a piece. Not for the competitors though. I think it may be on youtube.

I'm really struck this season about the diversity of the cast. I think it's neat that many different ethnic groups are represented, and how the cast does not seem dominated by white people as in years past.
