he who has never been drunk
Dec. 13th, 2004 03:46 pmSometimes in the course of my workday I encounter noteworthy things. Today I share with you "He Who Has Never Been Drunk," the translated lyrics to a German drinking song. I'm not sure if Juchhe is a person or an exclaimation or some odd German thing...
He, who has never been drunk, is not a real man
Juchhe, is not a real man
He, who drinks from glasses small,
Better he didn't drink at all
Everything goes round and round,
And round in our head
I always say, stay moderate
You notice, I'm still standing straight
When on your posterior you fall,
Don't waste the wine, don't spill it all!
This wine is so straight and clear,
It doesn't bubble, it doesn't taste queer
A cheer for every drinking man, whose glass makes him forget
Juchhe, the curse of labor and life's woes without a single regret
But the man who doesn't like to drink
Is not quite human, that's what I think.
I'm drinking because I like my drink, because I like my wine
Juchhe, until the reaper with the scythe will lay me out one time
Then my life's tale has come to pass
And my great thirst will be quenched at last.
He, who has never been drunk, is not a real man
Juchhe, is not a real man
He, who drinks from glasses small,
Better he didn't drink at all
Everything goes round and round,
And round in our head
I always say, stay moderate
You notice, I'm still standing straight
When on your posterior you fall,
Don't waste the wine, don't spill it all!
This wine is so straight and clear,
It doesn't bubble, it doesn't taste queer
A cheer for every drinking man, whose glass makes him forget
Juchhe, the curse of labor and life's woes without a single regret
But the man who doesn't like to drink
Is not quite human, that's what I think.
I'm drinking because I like my drink, because I like my wine
Juchhe, until the reaper with the scythe will lay me out one time
Then my life's tale has come to pass
And my great thirst will be quenched at last.
