Loved the Mia Michaels opening number, with all the Victorian steampunk-esque black and white circus outfits. At times I wanted the dancers to stop just so I could look at the costumes! It was very creative and used everybody's strengths well. Dance crew Quest were pretty good--the choreo seemed a little ragged at points, but perhaps it was improv, I don't know how these things work. The song and the mad scientist theme were a lot of fun. Plus it was nice to see Hok and Dominic again. Yay for DVD-R so I can skip the musical guests!
Was surprised to see Kourtni and Matt in the bottom three, but I suppose as one of the judges said, at this point there will be good dancers at the bottom because somebody has to be. Kourtni's solo was sweet in a kitten-fierce kind of way, but I was really impressed by Matt. He has a maturity to his dancing that a lot of the other contemporary boys don't have. Clearly it was no contest between him on the one hand and Thayne/Chris on the other, though after last week's wrongheaded Marquis decision nothing can be taken for granted. Luckily the judges agreed with me this week, and Comfort is free to stretch herself with a new partner. I'm not sure Thayne is all that much better than Chris, but I think he will at least throw himself into unfamiliar styles with more grace. I thought Comfort's solo was actually rather blah (I think she did too from the look on her face when it ended, she doesn't hide her emotions very well) and if they were judging purely on the basis of the solos she ought to have gone home, but I think it's also been clear for a couple of weeks that while Chelsea T is very talented, she's also at the deep end of her pool and struggling with the routines. I was sorry to see her go, but I think it was the right decision.
I did something to my knee while dancing or doing yoga last night. Or really, an area next to my knee; I think it's the bottom end of the IT band. Ice and ibuprofen for me today! I want very much to go out to the Melt CD release show with Dreamchild and Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys but if I am too much of a broken toy myself, that might not happen.
