practice makes perfect
Oct. 13th, 2004 11:55 amOr better, anyway. My drilling on Sunday of one of the movements that was giving me trouble paid off, because with more coaching in class on Tuesday I've more or less got it, and even felt somewhat coordinated while doing it. It's a side-stepping movement where you start with both feet together, knees slightly bent and pelvis tucked, body facing forward. Then if you are moving to the right, you push off from the left foot, leaving it where it is while the right uses the momentum to move a step over, knees are then straight and pelvis pushed to the back into the left hip. Pull left leg into right, lather, rinse, repeat. All the while your upper body stays as level as possible, so you've got this rocking movement carrying you along underneath, with a little pop at the back. And then you add a 3/4 shimmy. Oh, and your arms are supposed to be doing something coordinated, too. I've had a lot of trouble with this one, so it's nice to see it finally looking remotely like a dance move and not like some spastic frankenstein thing.
We also did cane until I had blisters on my hand, quite painful today. Cool stuff though; we were swinging the canes in a circle next to our bodies while doing double hip drops in a circle. It's hard because the cane gains its own momentum and trajectory which is not quite the same as the direction you want it to go. It's easy to whack yourself on the back of the head with this one if you lose control. I did not hit my head, but that might have hurt less than these blisters, I don't know. Shampoo in the shower this morning + open blisters = ow.
The squirrel at my work is hanging out in the tree eating berries. It's gotten very plump in the last week. It sounds like a small rhinoceros when it runs across the metal roof of my bay window. The squirrels at my house still haven't caught on to the tulip and crocus bulbs I planted on the weekend. I am beginning to sustain some hope that I will have tulips and crocuses next summer.
M and I drove by my elementary school the other day. It's been demolished so that the town can build a new one. I viewed the destruction with no small sense of glee.
