Sep. 25th, 2004 10:08 pmMorocco said my camels were beautiful*. I am glowing with pride and joy. She is without a doubt the grand doyenne of American dans orientale (she yells at you if you call it belly dance). The stories she tells are worth as much as the dance lessons.
Her workshops pack one heck of a wallop though. When she teaches choreography, she does it by teaching the first phrase. You dance it four times to music. She teaches the second phrase. You dance the first and second phrase four times to music. She teaches the third phrase. You dance the first, second and third phrases to music. repeat for four hours, which is how long it takes to do a three and a half minute song. She has a tape set up with the piece of music chopped up into pieces so that she isn't constantly rewinding the tape, very cleverly.
I got home at about 8:30, took a bath, ate dinner, drank half a beer, and am now ready to float away to neverneverland, which would be a good place to go since I have four more hours of workshop tomorrow. hence, I stop typing now.
*by which she meant a lower body undulation, not some actual beautiful camels that I had brought with me.

Date: 2004-09-26 07:41 am (UTC)Many of the more crunchy granola types gasped when I put on the shoes--"you're going to dance in those/b>?" No matter how much I explained that my calf muscles are already short and hence need some propping up, everybody kept telling me I'd shorten my calf muscles.
But on the other hand, I read recently about a workshop taught in the US by an Egyptian dancer who took one look at all the barefoot US dancers and said, "What, do you think we Egyptians are too poor to buy shoes? Have some dignity, people!" ;-)
