I blame the drummer boy
Jul. 20th, 2007 06:28 pmSadly, I really do not like the new Rasputina album. They've totally gone in this neo-hippie burner prog direction. Where is the charming Ladies' Cello Society of days gone by? I suppose all things must come to their end, and the scene is never what it used to be, but it makes me sad. There were a few things I didn't like about their sound at the live show a couple of months ago, but I thought those might be things that would get ironed out in recording. Sadly, they were the very things that were emphasized in the recording. And while the idea of taking lyrics from headlines and news stories is potentially interesting, I think ultimately it robs the songs of much of the lyrical whimsy of songs gone by. It's good that Melora et al want to experiment and not be locked into a formula, and I can respect them artistically for it, but this is not a direction that works for me. Probably turn out to be their best selling album ever, just watch.
omg this Fella song Ahl el Maghna is totally old school country Arabic style, with whinnying horses, gunshots, banjos, fiddles, yodeling and everything, plus mawwal vocals and Arabic percussion! Brilliant!!! Much cleverer than Rasputina these days. If I ever have to do some kind of Western themed show, I know exactly what I'll be using!
