the sky(bar)'s gone out
Jun. 27th, 2007 02:14 pmSomerville's 8-year-old Sky Bar will host its final show July 15. The club's owner, Mike Qiu, has decided to expand the adjacent China Delight restaurant rather than bear the cost of installing a $40,000 sprinkler system to comply with safety regulations. Not surprisingly, New England clubs have faced more stringent inspections since the 2003 fire at the Station nightclub in Warwick, R.I.
"This is more than most people make in a year," [Anderson Mar] said of the sprinkler cost. "If (Qiu) expands the restaurant, he can get out of installing the sprinklers through a technicality."
"We'll have all kinds of crazy activities," she said. "I've been dealing with genres other venues wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole. We were the only venue doing metal shows after O'Brien's closed (temporarily for renovations)."
