Just got a voicemail from Dahlal--they are sending out my costume on Monday!  As I hoped, they weren't getting back to me because they were scrambling to find beads and they will do the work before sending it out.  She said the beads on the scarf won't match the beads on the bra exactly but it's as close as anybody is likely to get, which I can accept.  I sent back the scarf I didn't want to the Belly Dance Shop today and hopefully they will be sending a new one to me on Monday as well.  After this, I solemnly swear never to buy important costuming items on line again.  Until the next time, anyway.

I have a million thoughts about the Virginia Tech shootings but I don't know that I can say anything that nobody else has said, so I'll keep them mostly in my head.  I'll just observe that from an anthropological perspective it is interesting to see how concepts of the alien and the Other are at play in the media and social discourse.  The other thing that I will mention is that while all the deaths are senseless and sad, I was struck the most by the death of a girl named Reema.  She was very active in her local belly dance community and taught folk dance in her native local Lebanese community.   Some dancers are talking about setting up a small scholarship in her memory, and I would give money to that.

It's just such an unfathomable waste of life, and one we're doomed to repeat since the root problems never seem to get addressed in favour of the blame game and rushed "healing".

For what it's worth, at least stories like Reema's are coming out. It's so disturbing anytime the killer takes up all the attention and gets exactly what they wanted... publicity and infamy.
