Ronan update
Feb. 2nd, 2007 04:36 pmSaw Dr. M at Angell today, with a bunch of questions about Ronan. The black lump on his toe is partly a blood blister, which burst as it was being examined, but there is some other kind of tissue in there as well. It is most likely a mast cell tumor; those are usually very itchy and somewhat painful, but since this one doesn't seem to be bothering Ronan at all and they don't metastacize in ferrets we will just leave it alone if it doesn't get any bigger. Probably the dense tough skin of the paw pad just doesn't have enough nerve endings for the usual itchiness to be felt. I also asked Dr. M to take a look inside his mouth, since he's really been protesting getting his teeth brushed. Apart from some plaque build-up, everything looked fine. I am not thrilled with that, actually, since it really seems like there is something wrong, but I guess if there's nothing to be seen, there's nothing really to be done. Finally, I got a sample of some rabbit-based kibble, and I'm happy to say that Ronan ate the few pieces that I had mixed in with his food when we got home. So I'll gradually shift him over to all rabbit kibble and see if that makes his tummy any happier. It would make sense, really, since polecats are more likely to eat rabbits than chickens in the wild. They are definitely less likely to eat hormone-laden highly processed meat of any kind.
Dr. M is showing a lot of improvement herself. She's still a little too cutesy for me, but the nervous giggling has abated and she was a lot more confident, even inviting me to look in Ronan's mouth with her. I still somewhat felt as though I was running the appointment and not her, and she kept losing sight of small details, but all in all, she has clearly grown as a vet. I still don't like that we were somebody's training run, given that we are old loyal Angell clients with a complicated case, but I feel more confident now that her lack of experience won't harm Ronan. And that's what matters the most in the end.
I need to dance now but I am tired and freezing. I know that once I get started I'll have more energy and be quite warm, but at the moment I just want to crawl back into bed...
