serious spoilers after the cut (this episode only, no future spoilers), spoilers welcome in the comments, so consider yourself warned...

Nnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, now that's out of the way.  As sad as I am that Mister Eko is dead, the story was such a fascinating insight into whatever it is that generally gets called "the island."  I think the island genuinely wasn't sure about Mr. Eko, whether his new-found faith was a real transformation or not, and needed to hear his confession, his words truly from his soul, to know what to do about him.  I had a growing sense of dread as Eko said "it's the life that was given to me, I had no choices"--there are always choices, and there were people all around him, including his own brother, making different choices even though they were given the same or a very similar life.  And look at Locke, beaten down by life at every turn, yet he does not resort to violence, even for his own protection (at least in what we've seen so far).  For Eko to not only be unrepentant but proud of being a murderer, well, apparently that's not what the island likes to hear.  I guess if the rest of them are next, we'll find out if there is anything the island likes to hear...  Though I'm guessing that Locke is cool with it again and that he'll be ok.  After all, Benry said he was one of the good ones.  (so are Benry/the Others and the island on the same side of things, whatever side that is?)  Pretty chilling scene when the black smoke monster was in the form of Eko's brother, a dusty dead priest coldly saying "you speak to me as though I were your brother"--it seemed profoundly alien and, well, Other in that moment.

And jesus christ, the eyepatch man!  Luckily I hadn't seen the previews for the episode so I had no idea that was coming and jumped out of my seat when he appeared.  AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I also liked Benry asking Jack if he had noticed that Juliette looked like his ex-wife, because the internets have been complaining about that from the start of the season.  There are no coincidences, only fate!

The new Lostie cast members seem pretty whiny and like Boone/Shannon standins so far; not that interested in them at this point.

So all in all, I am very excited by the season trajectory so far and I am sad that we only get one more episode before the hiatus.

Good practice session for the contest last night.  I have more time booked at the Dance Complex tonight; I wish I had another week to prepare, but that's life.  I think whatever the results of the contest, I'm going to be pretty happy with this routine when all is said and done.  Just the process of thinking about how to transition saidi movements one to another has been very useful.

I was sort of let down by the episode -- we didn't really learn anything new about Eko except that he did not feel he needed forgiveness, but that didn't seem to connect with the character we had seen in earlier episodes. The flashbacks told us what we already knew -- he is a false priest and a ruthless killer.

Desmond, Locke, and Sayid barely seemed like they were there, and the new red shirts aren't compelling. Maybe they should've opened the seasons with the red shirts' flashbacks? I think they lost some compelling characters (like Libby) and so far the new ones aren't there yet.

I did like the Jack/Ben/Juliette parts. The interesting thing is the question of whether they are still manipulating him. Is telling him that they were planning to try to break him a way of trying to break him? Did Ben effectively admit that they are 'bad', or at least have true ill will towards the losties? Is Juliette trying to flush him out?

Grand Canyon........

And jesus christ, the eyepatch man! ... yeah - Seriously! I snarled at the screen... (and woke the cats up ;P) Looks like City of Lost Children!

Ben/Jack/Juliette.... twist within a twist within spriral.... there is more going on here than she's telling...
