Voltaic Vaudeville
Oct. 16th, 2006 11:51 amIn a celebratory return to its roots as one of the Metro-Boston’s premiere early 20th Century playhouses, the Regent Theatre—“Arlington’s Show Place of Entertainment” since 1916—will present Voltaic Vaudeville, a weekend of spectacular variety performances—from vintage to cutting-edge—Thursday, October 19 through Sunday October 22, 2006. Five shows over four days—including two family-friendly matinees—will feature non-stop eye-popping entertainment from Boston’s underground performance circuit together with special guest artists from around the country and overseas. All five performances will feature a different line-up of world-class acts ranging from madcap jugglers and plate spinners, to dazzling tap and burlesque dancers, to a “non- motivational speaker,” a rogue poet, and an operatic duo.
Voltaic Vaudeville will be hosted by Boston’s favorite new--vaudevillian, Evan O’Television—and his quirky brand of “ven-tele-quism” in which he argues with a prerecorded version of himself. Evan has been performing variations on his two-of-a-kind comedy routine since 1995. From the Comedy Studio in Cambridge to P.S. 122 in New York, Evan's difficult-to-categorize double-act has been featured at art shows, galleries, rock clubs, academic conferences, puppet slams, film festivals, and comedy clubs. He is a founder and former producer of the legendary PAN 9 arts collective in Allston, MA, and in 2007 he will be a featured entry in Vaudeville, Old and New: An Encyclopedia of Variety Performers to be published by Routledge Press.
Serving at pit orchestra for all five shows, the Beat Circus Vaudeville Orchestra is a large all-star ensemble that specializes in early jazz from the turn-of-the-century, including Tin Pan Alley parlour songs, bawdyhouse burlesque grinds, and 1920s Chicago hothouse dancehall music for orchestra.
Voltaic Vaudeville will be presented at the historic Regent Theatre on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday October 19, 20 and 21 at 8pm with matinees Saturday and Sunday October 21 and 22 at 2pm. Reserved seats are $10, $15, and $20. Located at 7 Medford Street (off Mass. Ave.) in Arlington Center, the Regent Theatre is MBTA and wheelchair accessible with free parking across the street. Too funny, b/c we have a group with former members of Rvd. Glasseye + Shoe + others that have supposedly been working on similar material for Oddville Vaudeville & other circus-y gigs in the future.
LMK how the show goes!
