Dec. 18th, 2006 11:43 amI participated in my first Yankee swap ever this weekend, at a party where I knew nobody but the hostess and her husband (one other person I knew arrived later). It was fun, everybody brought good--by which I mean silly--stuff, like Bling-Bling Barney and a Barbie doll with a dog that poops. I totally won, getting and keeping a little pillow with a woodblock print of a kangaroo rat with a leaf nosed bat's head and what looks like an alligator's teeth, all topped with a pink bow between its ears. The woman who brought it was super excited that somebody else thought it was cool. It felt very adventurous going to a party full of strangers, but they were all very nice inclusive interesting strangers. I learned that Vista is a good conversation-starter/ice breaker, we can all share in the joy of Microsoft bashing.
My set on Sunday night was interesting, in the less positive sense of the word. Right before I went on, a big party of about 20 people paid up and left, so not only was the restaurant suddenly empty, but tables were being broken down and moved around and large quantities of dishes were being bused, so there was much hustle and bustle going on and me trying to dance through it all. The night was already running about 15 minutes behind schedule, so waiting for the tables to be cleared wasn't really an option. Because that one group was so large, when they left it meant that there were way more people back by the bar than up in the front. Somehow, I managed. M said I looked relaxed. Good learning experience, I guess.
Forgot to set up January dates while I was there, so at the moment the next dance engagement on my calendar isn't until May. No, I take that back--April, with another appearance at the Athenian Corner. Not that my dance card won't fill up right quick, but it's nice to feel a little breathing room for the moment.
I need to go clothes shopping most direly. Looking into my closets, I realized that I have three wardrobes: work clothes, t-shirts and cargo pants, and belly dance costumes, plus a smattering of clubwear--no nice dressy or even dressy casual clothes that feel like me. Maybe I'll brave the crazy Boxing Day crowds downtown, I have a chiro appointment in Coolidge Corner that day anyway...
