Jul. 11th, 2006 01:18 pmKarshilama class wasn't that bad after all. I think I'm starting to sort of get it. I still don't prefer it to other things--in fact, I'd argue it isn't really belly dancing anyway--but I will admit that once it finally started to sink it, it was kind of fun. I think the two things that really helped were 1) only about half the class was present, so the zills weren't so deafening and 2) we spent a while on the arm and hand gestures that go with the music. Standing still and moving just my hands/arms and not having zills drown out the music was probably just what I needed to really get the feel of the music, to internalize that there is some kind of discernable pattern beyond just 121212123. I finally found my dums and teks in it.
If nothing else, karshilama is a good workout, I'll say that for it. My arms are a little achey today from all the skirt swishing.
M and I watched Gypsy 83 last night--I don't know how I did not see this movie sooner! I guess I was probably a bit put off by the Stevie Nicks thing, as I am not remotely a fan, but she's really just a plot device. Plus they couldn't get the rights to use her music, so there's no suffering through that. Anyway, if you have not yet seen this movie, you must! I laughed and cried and everything in between.
