Jun. 24th, 2005 09:51 amToo much Animal Planet before bed means largely good dreams about foxes and distubing/saddening dreams about trying to defend starving pit bulls from people who were trying to kill them (openly and honestly, not just by neglecting them). I think I had big teeth and definitely long claws. I watch these Animal Precinct and Animal Cop shows knowing that they are going to upset me, but once I start, I feel compelled to finish the episode to know what happens, as though my continuing to watch might save the horse with the infected feet or the emaciated pit bull with the terrible scars. I think in my dream I was successful in defending the pit bulls (unlike in the episode of Animal Cops, in which they all died), but I woke up furious and ready to fight. Strange way to start the day.
I think there were cats in my dreams as well, due to having watched Studio Ghibli/Hiroyuki Morita's The Cat Returns last night as well. Standard Miyazaki-type themes, certainly a practice run for the sutdio's later, greater films, but very charming and enjoyable nonetheless. The cats were ever so cat-like even as they pretended to be more human. I really liked the drawing of the lead character, Haru; there was something very open about her face. Maybe the somewhat less polished drawing style allowed more emotion through in a way, or maybe since she was a slightly older girl heroine she expressed more cusp of adulthood emotion. Anyway, I would recommend it to fans of this sort of thing.
We fired up the new grill for the first time last night, to make sure things will be ready for the big belated father's day extravaganza we're hosting on Sunday. I made vegetable brochettes and tuna steaks. Yum! I feel like the whole weekend is going to be eaten up by this thing--tonight we are doing the grocery shopping, and then tomorrow in the beastly heat I will clean and clean and clean and clean. M's family's womenfolk tend to be much neater and cleaner than my family's. In fact, my mom claims her family has no gene for housecleaning. Somehow I get sucked into this "must present a nice wifey clean house" thing when in-laws come to visit. Maybe it's because in so many other ways I don't play wife very well, at least by New England Irish Catholic standards (I not only let my husband be a rock star, I encourage him! I go out at night to dance rehearsals! *Belly dance* rehearsals!). Oh well, I guess whatever the reason, it will be good to have accomplished everything in the end. crematia13 would be there, but sadly his work schedule won't allow it. M's parents can't really drive after dark, so we have to start everything much earlier than we would be naturally inclined.
Soembody should invent a sort of brochette frame, something you could put multiple brochettes into and clip the ends of the sticks down so that you can flip them all over at once. We do have one of those grilling baskets, but then the food isn't directly on the grill so that's not a great solution. Hmm, something like that must exist...
