Nov. 3rd, 2004 01:23 pmIt's a nice sunny day. There's a really cute big fat squirrel in the tree outside my window. Pan has put on a little more weight. The new Nick Cave album(s) isn't as bad as it could have been. I'm not as sick as I was yesterday. LRose Designs found my lost order and will ship it out today. The world hasn't ended; in fact it continues on much as it did before. The local politicians who mattered to me, who I trust to handle local affairs well, won their races. Kerry didn't win. But could I honestly say I had faith in that particular man to fix everything that's wrong with the US right now? No. I don't think he's a bad man, I don't think he's a flip-flopper, I think he would have earnestly tried his best and he would have taken positions similar to those I would like a president to take. But he just didn't have that spark of charisma to make himself a believable candidate. He got the anybody-but-Bush vote, but that wasn't enough. He didn't have the votes of committed followers.
I would suspect that many people who voted for Bush also believe that he has engaged in cronyism when it came to the oil industry and Halliburton, that he dodged his military service, that there are things he has lied about, that he is a sleazy frat boy personality-wise, etc. But you know what? He did all that with success, so they figure that makes him a good leader who will do whatever it takes to get the job done, even if it isn't entirely the right thing to do.
And you know what else? That's not too far off from why I'll vote for Hillary in 2008.
To return to the spirit of optimism with which this entry began, I'll hope that it's Obama up there with her.
