Tearing up credit card applications is apparently not enough to prevent somebody from using them--scary story found via boing boing.  I try to remember to bring those to work with me to shred, now I'll be extra vigilant about remembering...

I bought a shredder on sale at Staples, and keep it by where we put the mail. It's surprising how quickly it fills up.

Should anyone consider getting their own shredder, be sure to get one that cross-cuts as well as shreds. Now, you'd think that all shredders would have that feature, but they don't. Perhaps they are useful for making packing material from newspapers, or for papier mache projects; but they are not useful for securely shredding things with one's personal info on them.

I second the shredder note! The one we bought was only $30 and does cross cut, fairly large volume per day, and even shreds credit cards themselves :) We keep it right next to our trash can and throw away the bits that don't have private info on them (reply envelopes, coupons) and shred anything that does have our info on them (apps, etc).

OK, I always wanted a chiminea anyway. Don't have a yard, as such, so it seemed like a bit of a silly thing to want. Now I'm thinking it's a security device. Screw shredding, just burn the stuff.

I do keep those included postage paid envelopes to send back to the credit card companies though, empty and on their dime. A small revenge, but slightly satisfying.

Good lord.
I had no idea. Thank you. Will start ripping those right up.
I'm content right now that if any potential identity thief wanted to go through my garbage, they'd have to wade through a hefty amount of used and stinky kitty litter to get to the junk mail and annoying solicitations. :) They would have to be determined.

So glad that I shred damn near every bit of junk mail.
