I stopped by the downtown Filene's, which is having massive clearance sales, to look for a tacky dress to wear for a melaya leff[1], but all I could find were wonderful elegant dresses of black velvet, chiffon and sparkly bits. I think I am going to have to go back there on Monday dressed for trying stuff on. I suppose I should look for work clothes and perhaps a suit or two as well, but who wants to look at that stuff when there's cheap evening gowns galore? Anyway, if you are in the metro Boston area it's worth checking out Filene's for stuff (including cookware--good deals on pots and pans!), and I imagine the sales will only get better as the store closing date draws closer. They had sections of nearly every floor blocked off with signs about how they are getting ready for their huge clearance sale. I feel like such a vulture, but I might as well profit from their closing. It feels odd to be attached to a department store, but they were pretty reliable about having whatever it was I was looking for. And I hate Macy's.
I also went there looking for a small rolling suitcase to use for dance gigs, but was astounded by how expensive the luggage was. I mean, I knew some luggage was that expensive, but isn't there any midrange stuff? I don't want a bag that will fall apart, but I also don't want a bag that I have to worry about people stealing for its own sake, never mind what's in it.
And I went there to go to the MAC counter--what will I do without a T-accessible MAC? Oh the heartbreak! I had six empty containers to return for a free lipstick, which is MAC's recycling/customer loyalty program. I was slightly horrified to see the guy who was helping me chuck the empties straight into the trash after he counted them. I will cling to the faint hope that with the store closing soon, they can't deal with a bunch of empty containers floating around. At least I got a lipstick out of the deal.
[1] a melaya leff is a sort of character dance, a "fakeloric" piece based on the idea of the basically good at heart but young and flirty girls going down to the market (usually in Alexandria, so the dance is also often called an Eskanderia) to check out the guys and break hearts. The girls are of the lower class and do not have sophisticated taste, hence the need for a tacky dress--tacky is maybe not the right word, at least not for what I am looking for. I'd like something kind of slinky that I can tie a coin belt over for a drum solo following the melaya leff portion of the routine. And, um, not black, since the melaya wrap worn over the dress is black. I am not good at shopping for this kind of item...

Date: 2006-02-14 06:07 pm (UTC)i hate Filene's. it's the sorriest excuse for an upper echelon department store that i've ever seen. especially the one downtown. that, and their staff are always rude and unhelpful. every Filene's employee needs to go work at Nordstrom for a year to learn about what "classy" is and how customer service should be done.
Boston could really use a Nordstrom. of course, it'll never happen because there's no place in Boston that will give Nordstrom free space.
