I haven't made bread from scratch in I don't honestly know how long, but as soon as I turned out the ball of dough onto the floured counter and felt that satiny smooth texture my hands went into autopilot, stretching and pushing and creating. I was listening to balady music, and inevitably I thought about women who might be making bread halfway across the world* maybe singing some of these songs or humming them as they worked, and I felt happily like a goddamned hippy connected to women all over the world, all of us making bread with our hands.

*because by the time I got my bread underway, there were probably women in Egypt waking up and starting the day's bread, or perhaps even taking it out of the oven. I don't know why it seemed like a good idea to go christmas shopping downtown (oh the horror!) and *then* come home and start baking bread at 8pm. And of course I can't just make some nice country bread or oatmeal bread or anything, I have to make the braided olive bread with strands of green olive dough, black olive dough and plain dough, which is really like making three kinds of bread all at the same time. Well, it gives me an excuse to stay up and watch New Breed Vets, a show about innovative and inventive vet care on Animal Planet. I like it a lot, even if it is hosted by Steve Irwin. Since the show is not about him, he's relatively subdued.

I really wish I had a better head for science, I do. I'd go to vet school and save bald eagles and fix horses' feet and do surgery on elephant seals and figure out the cure for adrenal gland disorder in ferrets. If I only had a brain.

Sometimes you have to jump in when you get the inspiration, whether it be baking bread at 8pm or repotting outdoor plants at 10pm. We create when it hits us!

It saddens me that my grandmother has to use a breadmaker, after decades of making bread by hand, because her arthritis has gotten so bad. It's time my sister and I took up the mantle. Mom does cookies and pies, but not bread.

I love olive bread, and yours sounds delicious.

You could always go into a related field. Tufts offers a Master of Science in animals and public policy that is much less science-intensive.
