Help Ferrets be Legal in CA!
Jul. 7th, 2004 03:30 pmAs some of you may know, ferrets are currently illegal in CA. Gov. Ahnold's office is collecting opinions on ferret legalization, and it's super easy to express your support--
Just call 916 445-2841, then to respond to legislation, press #2, then listen for SB 89, press #3, then to support SB 89 press #1. That's all you have to do, no talking or anything, so it's easy to do steathily while at work ;) You do not have to be a CA resident to express an opinion on the legislation, but of course it would help, so if you know of any CA residents who might support ferret legalization, or be willing to take a couple of seconds to help out ferret owners, please let them know about this!
There are currently thousands, perhaps a couple hundred thousand, of ferrrets in CA illegally, so clearly the CA FIsh and Game arguments against them (that they'll kill all the local wildlife and destroy agriculture in the state) are not valid. Legalizing ferrets would allow vets to treat them without fear of official reprisal and give ferret owners the same rights as cat and dog owners. Currently if you are caught with a ferret in CA, you are fined or sent to jail and your ferret is confiscated. If an out-of-state shelter has worked out a deal with the local animal control, the ferret will be taken out of state and adopted out, but if not, it is euthanized. That is No Good.
