SYTYCD results

It was surprising to see Will and Jessica and Twitch and Kherington in the bottom three, but it was fair, and also somewhat heartening about whoever the sort of people who vote on this show must be--performance does seem to matter more than cult of personality or popularity.  I guess America and I think more alike than I thought we did.

The Alvin Ailey dancers were, well, what they are, tremendous.  I don't agree with Nigel that Will would fit right in--but I think in time he would.  You could really see the difference in mature, highly trained dancers compared to the contestants.  Powerful piece.  I've never seen them live but I'd like to.

So the solos:

First of all, what is up with that OneRepublic band?  Are they the official SYTYCD band or something?  They epitomize all that I hate about commercial rock.  Some of the music has been great this season, but give that band a rest already!

Comfort's solo was very good, but she's become one note for me.  I had no idea she'd only been dancing formally for two and a half years, so I am impressed with what she's done and I'm sure she'll go on to bigger things.  I really do think that her body was giving out on her, one of the differences that years of conditioning makes.  I hope she will learn from this and build.

Jessica's solo was a bit lack lustre for me.  The most interesting part was wondering whether she was going to roll out of her top or not, and I think I caught some blurring at one point so I think the producers were worried about it and taking precautions just in case.  She didn't do anything wrong, but...

Kherington's solo was beautiful, an example of what happens when you have a dancer with good technique *and* the ability to communicate her passion to the audience.  She acts all silly but I think there's depths there that the show is encouraging her to discover.

Thayne's solo was very good; I knew he'd be going home barring one of the others falling flat on his ass, so it was a bit sad to see him do so well.  I rather agreed with the judges' sentiment that it was too bad they couldn't keep all three boys and boot out two girls.

Will's solo was dynamic and fascinating.  I think the criticism leveled against Marquis of being too tricksy could easily have been made of Will, but obviously the judges weren't going to do that.  As I said, not Alvin Ailey material yet, but he will be.

I loved Twitch's solo, dancing to the violin music.  As a former violinist I'm a sucker for music that features violin prominently and I loved the way he interpreted it.  From the little bit that he said about the music, it sounded like he put a lot of thought into the piece and it showed.  I didn't want it to end.

I'd heard about but never heard that I Kissed a Girl song.  I think the thing that bugs me about the song is not so much the coy "I hope my boyfriend won't mind" but the bragging "I didn't even know your name."  Great, so now women can treat each other like disposable objects.  Yay equality of the sexes!

I thought Cat Deely's hair was going to engulf some of the shorter dancers.

I did a samba DVD when I got home from work today.  That'll make you sweat.

You must go see Alvin Ailey live. It's an experience of sitting there in awe of these dancers!!!

Yeah, what's up with the OneRepublic music? Oh, well.

Twitch...i couldn't get enough of that piece. That was AMAZING!

Oh and that whole I Kissed a Girl song....Tired. Don't understand all the hype about the song. Jill Sobule had a song called I Kissed a Girl years ago which was a sweet song. Not as brazen as last night's singer but...*Yawn*.

Akashablue is right, AA is an experience not to be missed, I've gone twice as birthday gifts. LOVED it.

They are amazing, both in solo's and in the group numbers. I cried.

Want to make a trip into the City the weekend of Aug 9 for the AAADT 50th anniversary street party? See here http://www.alvinailey.org/page.php?p=arti&v=333%22

Free classes and performances! I'm considering this kind of seriously :-)! Although I plan to make a trip down a couple of weeks prior to start apartment hunting - the back and forth can get expensive with gas prices being high.

Just thought I would throw it out there as a *why-the-hell-not* crazy idea...
