Interesting article in Salon about being a young, hip Muslim today.  It's a review of two books, one titled Muhajababes that focuses more on ordinary people's lives and how they navigate/negotiate sex, relationships, haram things like booze and smoking, dress style and a new trendy sort of piety, and the other titled Heavy Metal Islam:  Rock, Resistance and the Struggle for the Soul of Islam, which focuses more on the producers of heavy metal, the musicians themselves.  Buried within the reviews is another story begging to be told about the charismatic Egyptian preacher/social leader Amr Khaled.  Anyway, if you're interested in this stuff, go read it.

A muhajababe was my seat mate on the plane coming back to Philly from Chicago. Headscarf, tight short dress over a pair of jeans, designer high heels and purse, impeccable makeup. I've been seeing more of them in my area; now I know what to call them. Thanks!

We have ones in my town who are more "street Muslima yo", teenagers who wear floorlength full skirts, tight longsleeved tops with tight longsleeved hoodies over them, and hijab. They're so cute.

Hey! They totally stole my online name for my friend's daughter, sort of - Mujahateen!

That's because her dad was in fact an Actual Mujahadeen, though.

You know, I noticed that the book spelled it "muhaja" instead of "mujaha"--I wonder if it's a different word, or if it's somebody picking their own letters to transliterate with. Mujahateen sounds like a comic book superheroine :)

You are right! It *is* a different word. They say it's from muhajab, which is another word for hijab. Similar, maybe related, but different.
