Such a great time at the Middle East last night--super audience plus music I love equals loads of fun for me!  Had a great time staying out dancing the night away, people were full of compliments which definitely added to my evening's euphoria.  I even got home to find a email from another dancer in the audience saying how much she enjoyed my set, and an invitation to dance in someone's upcoming hafli, so I'm quite full of myself at the moment ;-)  The only two drawbacks to the evening were that one, the music was so loud that there was some distortion going on, and two, I apparently really did not guard my expression when watching another dancer do some very questionable things on a table during her drum solo.  Oops!  Hopefully she was too busy to notice.

Today I am spending very unglamourously cleaning the house, but it has to be done.  I will crank the music and have a beer when I am done.  Ceremony is a possibility later.

um, why does "labor day" means that everyone else is off and we're cleaning? We need maids!

Sometimes it's hard (for me) to remember that it's just another style and that doesn't make it bad.

However, feet on the table does not seem very sanitary at all.

Seriously! My mom has observed that I make the third straight generation of women in our family who do not have a housekeeping gene.

How do shower walls get dirty? I mean with actual dirt? Sheesh.

Yeah, I try to keep in mind that it's another style with a long history and tradition. For me I think it was feet on the table combined with pelvic thrusts while lying back on the table. Just not classy. Some of her other antics were very entertaining, but that just crossed a line for me.

I loved the donkey video. But I have to know, why does he love the donkey?!?!?!?!?

I've been trying to figure that out--calling somebody a donkey in Egypt means you're calling them stupid. But at the same time, a donkey is a symbol of the rural lower classes, who need donkeys for a lot of their daily tasks. Shaabi music is often a celebration of the common man. So I'm guessing that it's something like an affectionate "I love you, stupid" to the lower classes, along the lines of "I know everybody thinks you're dumb, but I can see your good qualities, and life would grind to a halt without you." That's my theory, anyway--maybe he just really likes donkeys ;-)
