Did you read the more recent analysis of her book in Salon, I think by Joan Walsh? It sounds like things did change a lot after she joined the New Yorker/compiled the book. I couldn't tell, watching the show, whether she was just playing along with Colbert or not, but I kind of thought not. Bleh.
The broiler is a good idea, I'll have to get a good skillet with a non-plastic handle ;)
