Kenmore Square/Comm Ave PSA

From a BU police department notice:

...since January 14, there have been three reported robberies and one attempted robbery in and around the Boston University Charles River campus. One of these robberies occurred at the Kenmore Square T station and involved a weapon.  Some of the victims were Boston University students and all of them were reportedly talking on cell phones just prior to being robbed.

Hopefully nobody needs to be told not to walk around alone at night talking on your cellphone, but I pass this along just in case.  Victims were robbed of the phones and iPods.  The robberies were between 7pm and 9pm, so not that late.
 
Another reason to be content with my junky little phone that just makes calls and sends texts--it's so not worth stealing.

This happened yesterday, six blocks from my house and even closer to silas7's house:

An armed gunman dressed in camouflage fatigues was arrested yesterday in Arlington after he allegedly ran up and down a tree-lined street screaming incoherently and pointing a 9 mm handgun at his neighbors, police said.

The man, Nikita A. Ryabchenko, was also carrying an illegal double-sided knife, police said. Inside his apartment on Magnolia Street, investigators with a search warrant discovered several more illicit knives and an illegal, high capacity SKS assault rifle with ammunition, police said.

"Suffice to say he was well armed," said Chief Frederick Ryan of the Arlington Police Department.

Sigh.  Phone muggers outside my office, crazy people with assault rifles in my neighborhood--what kind of place do I live in?

I do not like the redesign of Gilded Serpent's front page *at all*.  First of all, it's tacky to let the viewers clearly see that the ads take up an equal amount of real estate to the content.  Secondly, I do not like the keyword method of describing what's in each article.  It's boring and doesn't inspire me to click on any of them.  Finally, I really miss having the posting date next to the article title, because that's how I kept track of whether I had read something or not.  This will be especially annoying now that the articles and reviews are listed in separate areas.

I appreciate a desire to update the look and make it sleeker, but this is not good.

I would just like to say that, for reals, as I read today's Dinosaur Comic, the Nick Cave song The Carney came up on my mp3 player.  I cannot imagine a better soundtrack.
