It's 1:30 in the afternoon, and according to weather.com it's 64 degrees out. YAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!! I knew there was some reason I had left my velvet jacket in the office...

Dancing went well last night. I didn't feel 100 percent in the moment, but response was good. I did cane again just to redeem myself after July's cane fiasco and it went much better, now that I was prepared for the space limitations and random stuff in the way. I guess I shouldn't call the last time a fiasco because it always could have been worse when it comes to cane, but I felt panicked. This time I felt relaxed about it and definitely felt redeemed. Sahar, the booking agent, said I had a unique style, in the most positive way, and is encouraging me to come to open floor nights with the live band on Wednesdays. I don't feel quite ready for that (plus there's the whole AmCab versus Arabic factor), but since I've got Wednesday rehearsals for the next couple of months I don't have to think about it for now. The only bad part of the evening really was that my bra straps kept heading for my elbows. I wasn't worried about the rest of the bra shifting around, but it's just not professional looking. Time to go see our fabulous local costume alteration genius, Shadia. I'm already picking out the music for next time--I'm thinking of Banat Baharei from Wash ya Wash II, because as long as I'm embracing cutesy cheesy beledi I might as well really go for it as an Iskandaria girl. ;) I don't have a melaya but faking it with a veil will be good enough for the venue.

Managed to watch a little horse racing over the weekend too--Powerscourt was just perfect in the Arlington Million. I thought he looked like a horse who planned to win in the post parade, and his plans worked out in a powerful way. I realized during the coverage though that I'll be at Johara's competition with Sarab on Breeder's Cup Day. Someday I will make it to one in person...

While grilling on Friday evening with M and [livejournal.com profile] shnells I made a delicious thing: zucchini cut lengthwise into slabs, rubbed on both sides with pesto, grilled until tender, and manchego cheese melted over the top. Total heaven!

And what else... went to WaterFire in Providence, which was brutally hot (what were we thinking? "gee, it's hot out; let's go stand next to a series of small bonfires!") but still somewhat magical in an primordially pagan way. due in no small part to the sort of music that they play. I received my fortune from a Delphic oracle and had tingly drinks with ginger and bourbon. Then yoga on Sunday was very good, intensely about the hips and hamstrings so that I was lucky to have much response left in my hips by Sunday night, which brings me back to where this entry more or less started. Therefore I must be done.

Oh--one other thing though, last night at the Middle East I ran into Leah from Reflecting Skin, who is back in the area and working on new music! I figured some of you would be happy to hear that :-)

I found the website for her current project, Molotov Elysian (note: has sound on opening). It looks like there is an EP coming out in September and a full length album on the way, hopefully gigs will be forthcoming! The band is described as:

Molotov Elysian is the experimental co-writings of Leah Chandra and Daisuke Fuchigami, a delightfully unexpected combination of two very different styles -- one soul-woven musings, the other studio-abusing sound collage. The duo weaves melody, music and noise; it is sung at times in English, at other times borrowing from other languages, and even other times in languages long forgotten or not yet created. The writing/arranging approach is largely inspired by methods forged by Eno/Lanois, early 4AD projects, and individual hybrid pieces like Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky. MolEl moves this hybrid-genre forward, exploring the bridges and patterns between realities and imagined potentials of language.

Sounds good to me! I tried to sign up for their email list but it seemed to be broken.

Updated to add: the mailing list thing does work, it only seems broken.

I'm having terrible luck with dvds--another one that I ordered from a generally reliable vendor arrived today, except that it wasn't the one that I ordered... Sigh. At least this one should be a straightforward return.

in other news, I am all that is good, pure and peaceful. )
