dirt is good
Apr. 3rd, 2005 04:09 pmI just spent an hour or two clearing out all the old dead vegetation and leaves from my little yard, and weeding out more of those damn onions. Underneath all the leaves, so many of my little plants have been coming back to life! It never fails to amaze me. I leave all the deadfall and leaves in the fall to provide a layer of insulation for the hibernating plants, but now is the time to clear it all away so that they can get some sun and wake up. Already showing signs of life, apart from the tulips, crocuses and daffodils, are two of my hostas, dusty miller, grape hyacinths, sage, lavendar, mint, woodruff, a purple dragon something or another, the day lillies and the bleeding heart plant I just put in last year. The hostas that are sprouting were originally split off from hostas at my mom's house, so it feels extra special to see them re-appear. I don't have much of a garden, but I feel like I'm carrying on my mother's tradition by working in it. My eyes and nose are full of dirt and my face feels scoured by the wind, but I feel very happy and satisfied. Thursday or Friday I will pick up some pansies for the purple pansy pot.
The damn onions are some variety of ornamental onion that a former resident planted. They do make for tall, elegant Burton-esque plants, but they spread like, well, weeds and threaten to take over the garden. They also smell very oniony as one pulls them up. I tried to make a deal with them that they could have the back corner where they would be left alone if they would keep out of the rest of the yard, but they have clearly broken our truce. From now on I show no mercy to onions. They have brought this fate upon themselves.
Now I need to make 8 small tassels of fake hair to go with the 2 small tassels and five large tassels I already have, attach all my tassels to the belt panels I completed yesterday and lace together the panels, cover a velvet bra in little metal thingies, and then dance when all that is done. After that a bath is most definitely in order. Somehow I suspect that even with the time change and the 11 hours of sleep I got last night that I will have no troubles sleeping well tonight.
