Oddville aftermath
Feb. 21st, 2006 11:30 amThe show on Saturday was really in its own way a transcendant kind of experience. It was one of those nights where performing just felt *good*, things went the way they should, the audience was right there with us, and everything flowed beautifully. During both my solo and the duet with
nepenthe01 , I found myself thinking "yes, this is exactly it, this is what I want to do" and those moments are what make the stress and injuries and occasional lack of a social life and everything else all worth it. The entire cast was wonderful, and to me we felt like a solid team. We all had each other's backs, supplying props, loaning makeup, filling in chorus lines, just making it all happen. I'm sure the party we descended on afterwards didn't know what hit it, what with our conga lines and mad 80s dancing, but it was a perfect way to end the night. (except that I managed to rip my toes while dancing around in my socks, sigh. I wish my feet would stop doing that. also I discovered that if you wear your long fringe belt through a performance, a car ride and a few hours of partying you have some serious detangling work to do later.)
I loved performing my Cramps number in all my leopard bad girlness. I think I need a motorcycle for the entrance and exit though. And possibly stilettos, if I can dance in them. I can't wait to see the video of the whole show, since I wasn't able to see anybody else perform what with costume changes and needing to be backstage waiting for cues. What I saw at the tech rehearsal was great though and I could certainly hear how much the audience was enjoying the show!
Didn't make it to yoga on Sunday in part because of staying at the aforementioned party until 4:30 am, but also because my body declared that it deserved a vacation. So it got one, and I happily did nothing except watch dance videos and do a gazillion loads of laundry and eat sushi for the rest of the day. Monday was actually pretty similar, with less sushi and more going to Target and Old Navy to consume material goods in honor of our nation's leaders. I finally have a little rolling suitcase, purchased for what seemed like a reasonable price, and I finally have a new black hoodie that isn't falling apart, unlike my old black hoodie that is disintegrating more and more every day. I also did a mad run-through of every piece of music I intend to dance to in the next couple of weeks (body vacation over!), and was pretty happy with everything. I'm supposed to do sword at a party on March 4, but I hadn't touched my sword in a year or so. Happily it appears that once you get a feel for balancing something on your head, the memory sticks with you. The gothic ponytails and black rose hairpieces definitely help as well. I really wish I had a better quality sword, but that's just not a possibility right now so I should put it out of my mind. Saroyan is supposed to be releasing its new line of swords soon, I'm thinking I might save up for the best on the market and not have to deal with poor balance, clunky detailing, etc. There's entirely too many things on my belly dance wish list right now: a pair of matched double veils, a silvery rectangular veil, a purple silk veil, another pair of shoes ina neutral color, a nice folkloric dress, a cabaret dress or two, a bedleh/costume with big chunky pharonics beadwork, that Tahiya Cariocca dress I want to have Shadia make, a dress for melaya, a gazillion dvds, the sword, etc, etc, etc. I could easily drop $2,000-$3,000 at the drop of a hat, if I had that kind of money floating around. I will have a chance to try on a cabaret dress that a friend is selling later this week; she described it as animal print, which is on the one hand good but on the other hand if it's too much like my leopard bedleh/skirt/accessories set, I can't let myself buy it no matter how much I want a dress. Right, self? Sure, self, sure.
Next performance is this Thursday at the Athenian Corner in Lowell, doing the AmCab thing and doing my best to smile like Miss Sunny Cheery America 2006 AD and not Miss Gothic Egypt 2006 BC. Then I dance Sunday night at the Middle East, hopefully doing some melaya leff after attending Katia's workshop on it earlier that day. Then that party on March 4, then my St. Patrick's Day thing on March 12 at the Middle East. Oh, and a photoshoot on March 11, which I guess will involve some dancing. That's for Amira Jamal's website in my role as a Jewel of Jamal. I'm trying to decide whether to bring two cabaret costumes, or one cabaret and one gothic. Guess I'll just ask Amira Jamal what she wants--all cabaret, or some diversity. Edited to add: and there's xMortis on March 10, as spitcurl just reminded me.
I slept til nearly 2:00pm on Monday and hence got very little sleep last night, maybe four hours and half of that was tossing and turning. I'm doing ok for now but the afternoon will be a feat of endurance, as will be Najmat's class. Though the latter will be in a good way. Oh, did I mention I'm now dancing in an informal troupe for her as well? It's just a class presentation for the Green Street Studios' annual open house/celebration thingy, but still, it makes me laugh at myself.
