I just heard back from the Arlington Center from the Arts, which would be a perfect venue for both the workshops and the hafli, only according to their lease they are not allowed to have performances on Sundays.  Argh!  It was totally affordable, too, and had no issues with having vendors.  I would just go for the Dance Complex, except that they for some reason do not allow vendors and we all wants shopping!  Well, back to the drawing board...  I might still see about having the workshops at the Dance Complex and the hafli elsewhere in the area...

What about a VFW hall or a Masonic hall? They tend to be inexpensive and usually don't care about Sundays :-). Or maybe a school? Sometimes they have dance studios and stages :-)

also is a workshop technically a performance or a class? could performances be Sat. night, and shopping/workshops be on both days?

I've thought about the VFW/American Legion/Elks etc option, but I'm hoping to find a workshop space with mirrors and a performance space with a little ambiance--it doesn't have to be too fancy, but hopefully not a backdrop of flags and eagles and wood paneling :-) Oh, and it should have parking and be T-accessible. I'm not really asking for much, am I... ;)

The workshops would be fine, they're technically classes. Unfortunately since we're one stop on a tightly scheduled tour, the headliners can't change the performance night. But I'll find somewhere, this was just a first thought.

I wish the place out in JP had more parking/better T accessibility--it would have worked well. But I can't inflict that kind of parking situation on out-of-towners :)

Hmmm...there's gotta be a bellydancer somewhere in the Boston area with a studio they'd want to "rent out" for this sort of thing. What about SpringStep?

Tony Williams' Dance Center?

I've never been, our tribe-mate Shirronda told us about it...but it's in JP, has parking (pay, I think), one block from the T, and has proper floors for dancing. Don't know how they are about vending or shows, but it's worth asking.

Did you think of Green St, or is it just out of the question?

Their lease has that written in? how strange! It's not against the law in arlington, or if it is, the Arlington Friends of the Drama are getting away with performing on Sundays somehow.

Springstep is definitely on my list to look into--they might be pricy, but they'd fit most of the other requirements (getting home from there at night without a car is difficult, though).

Green Street is crazy expensive, unfortunately, otherwise I'd use that in a heartbeat. Thanks for the other link, I'll look into it!

I'm guessing it's because the Center is in such a residential neighborhood--it used to be one of the junior high schools of the town, so it's a little away from the business districts.

Or maybe you just need to shmooze the right person at the right time at the ACA? I find them sometimes helpful, sometimes REALLY flaky. And they are no good via email.

But I had an idea!!! The YMCA theater in Central Sq??? In combination with the Dance Complex maybe, or maybe solo? They are cheap too...

I like the price at the Y, that's for sure, and if we could do without mirrors we could use just that venue. I'll have to take a look at it again--I remember being there before and thinking that the stage was too high for good sightlines, but maybe I was sitting on the floor or something...
