friday afternoon meme
Name 10 bands/singers (somewhat randomly):
1. Natasha Atlas
2. Gamal Goma
3. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
4. Faith and the Muse
5. Bjork
6. Oojami
7. Einsturzende Neubauten
8. Changelings
9. Sami Aly
10. PJ Harvey
(if you want to do this meme yourself, don't read what's behind the cut before compiling your list)
**What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
Oojami:
Chicky, although not because it is famous but because it is the first track on their first album, which I bought on a whim without having heard it.
**What is your favourite album of 8?
The Changelings:
That's tough--I think maybe Epicycles.
**What is your favourite lyric that 5 has sung?
Bjork:
we live on a mountain
right at the top
there's a beautiful view
from the top of the mountain
every morning I walk towards the edge
and throw little things off
like: car-parts, bottles and cutlery
or whatever I find lying around
it's become a habit
a way
to start the day
I go through all this
before you wake up
so I can feel happier
to be safe up here with you
it's real early morning
no-one is awake
I'm back at my cliff, still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
on their way down
I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
imagine what my body would sound like
slamming against those rocks
and when it lands
will my eyes be closed or open?
I go through all this
before you wake up
so I can feel happier
to be safe up here with you
(but it was a tough call between Hyperballad and It's Not Up To You)
**How many times have you seen 4 live?
Faith and the Muse:
Twice, I think--both times at ManRay.
**What is your favourite song of 7?
Einsturzende Neubauten:
oh man, that's impossible. Um, Armenia. No wait, Stella Maris. No, Die Befindlichkeit des Landes. Blume! Oh, I give up.
**What is a good memory you have considering the music of 10?
PJ Harvey:
First time I made out with my future husband, PJ Harvey was singing hot and heavy on the stereo, To Bring You My Love.
**Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
Nick Cave:
Oh hell yeah. Do You Love Me Part 2, that would be one of many. Though a lot of the sadness is saudade-sad.
**What is your favourite lyric that 2 has sung?
Gamal Goma:
Ha, that's a drummer.
**What is your favourite song by 9?
Si Abdo! (those of you who know the song, please read that in the girly sing song voice :)
**How did you get in to 3?
Nick Cave:
I was born to listen to Nick Cave, I think. The first person to give me a mix tape with some Nick Cave on it was my old high school friend who now runs with skinheads in Florida.
**What was the first song you heard by 4?
Faith and the Muse:
Most likely, Cantus.
**What is your favourite song by 1?
Natacha Atlas:
Kidda, I think. Though I have to admit an undying love for the overplayed I Put a Spell on You, I help to overplay it.
**How many time have you seen 9 live?
Sami Aly:
None.
**What is a good memory you have concerning 8?
The Changelings:
My first belly dance solo was to Johnny Ether's Great Escape. I was terrified but it was the launch of my gothic belly dance career.
**Is there a song of 2 that makes you sad?
Gamal Goma:
No, it's kind of hard to imagine a sad tabla solo.
**What is your favourite album of 5?
Bjork:
Vespertine
**What is your favourite lyric that 3 has sung?
Nick Cave:
I can't possibly answer that. But here's a favorite:
Brother, my cup is empty
and I haven't got a penny
For to buy no more whiskey
I have to go home
I am the captain of my pain
tis the bit, the bridle,
the trashing cane,
the stirrup, the harness,
the whipping mane
The pickled eye,
the shrinking brain
O brother buy me one more drink
I'll explain the nature of my pain
Yes, let me tell you once again
I am the captain of my pain
**What is your favourite song of 4?
Faith and the Muse:
At the moment possibly Relic Song, though since Sredni Vashtar is about a ferret I am quite partial to that one too.
**What is your favourite song of 10?
PJ Harvey:
The Dancer
**How many times have you seen 6 live?
Oojami:
Once. I performed onstage with them, too.
**What is your favourite album of 2?
Gamal Goma:
That would be the only one I own, Shake Me Ya Gamal.
**What is a great memory you have considering 9?
Sami Aly:
Dancing to Si Abdo and getting in touch with my inner bint al baladi.
**What is your favourite lyric that 6 has sung?
Oojami:
Hmm, can't say I listen to them for the lyrics, though the second album is a little more interesting in that regard. But how can you not love:
Aw people, yeah, listen to the chicky chicky boom boom boom!
